ANTIQUE ROWLAND & MARSELLUS FLOW BLUE STAFFORDSHIRE SALT LAKE COMMEM. PLATE

Description

Beautiful antique Staffordshire Flow Blue plate by Rowland & Marsellus Co. made as a souvenir or commemorative plate of Salt Lake which dates from early 1900s.  The scenes on the plate are of Temple Square, Brigham Young Monument, Lion & Bee Hive Houses, Salt Air Beach, Mormon Tabernacle, Eagle Gate and City & County Building.  The color is a beautiful rich blue (photos don't do it justice) with "flow blue" effect.  The plate measures 9 7/8 inches in diameter and has the deeply "rolled" edge that Rowland & Marsellus used on these plates.  The plate is in very good condition for age (over 100 years old).  Rowland & Marsellus was a New York importer who operated from 1893-1938.  They dealt with several pottery manufactures in Stoke on Trent (Staffordshire England) and had plates produced which were usually souvenir plates of American cities.  The "rolled edge" flow blue plates are considered highly collectible.  This particular plate has a diamond design on back with "R & M Co." which indicates it was most likely produced for Rowland by British Anchor Pottery Co. in Staffordshire.  Salt Lake is one of the more rare and hard to find flow blue commemorative plates that Rowland made.  Wonderful addition to a flow blue collection.
