Description
Although the contents page states 'March 1993' 10,000 Magazine was published in February 1994 as a one-off magazine produced by Prince and sold through his retail outlets including the NPG Stores in Minneapolis and London as well as his Glam Slam nightclubs. The original cost was .Subtitled 'The Beautiful Experience' the magazine is more of an oversized fashion magazine than a music magazine, 10,000 was launched at 'The Beautiful Experience' party at Paisley Park on February 13th where it had it's own room, displaying pages from the magazine. At the same party, Prince's slimmed-down NPG band were announced as '10,000' but remained as the NPG from then on. The Prince-related content was limited to several full page ads for related products including Glam Slam, 'The Most Beautiful Girl In The World' single, 'The Sacrifice Of Victor' video (credited to 'O(+>) Paisley Park Studios and the Neo Manifesto photography book.
The theme of beauty is in most of the articles (Beautiful Music, Beautiful Words, etc.). Lyrics to the 1986 unreleased song at the time, (and now part of the Sign of the Times Deluxe offering)
'Adonis & Bathsheeba' are given a full page. Artwork featuring Indian Goddess Shiva and the O(+> symbol for this track has since surfaced online which implies it may have been planned as a single in 1994.
Other articles include news on the auditions for the 'Erotic City' dancer in January 1994 at Paisley Park, an interview with actress Vanessa Marcil which briefly touches upon her role in the then-unreleased Prince film 'The Undertaker' and several fashion shoot spreads featuring many of the models later featured in the 'Beautiful' music video.
The first most Prince fans would have seen of 10,000 was in The Beautiful Experience film, shown in April 1994 around the world. An ad in the magazine (but not featured in the published magazine) leads Nona Gaye's character to call 1-800-New-Funk and 'access The Beautiful Experience'.
No other issues were created, more than likely the issue was a short idea to tie in with 'The Beautiful Experience' as the NPG Magazine was launched shortly after which was more of a typical 'fanzine' that was more focused on Prince and his projects, although another short-lived publication, it did feature a full page 'Out Now' ad for 10,000 Magazine.
In April 2012, a video tape, dubbed '10,000 Wallpaper' leaked online that featured several Prince demos from 1993-94 including tracks that would end up on Come, The Gold Experience and Chaos & Disorder over footage and graphics from the 10,000 magazine that was played on the large video screens at the Glam Slam clubs in 1994.
